We have been working as a church to cast both personal and corporate visions for our future. Over the last two months, we have met on Sunday nights (during our regular scheduled service at 6:00 p.m.) to discuss what it means to have vision, in light of the gospel. For me, it has been a challenging time, as God has continually reshaped my thinking personally and corporately.

Last night we wrapped up this series of discussions with a “Vision Challenge.” Before we concluded, I remarked, “Every vision has three parts – receipt, acceptance, and execution.” To the surprise of many, I concluded by asking the church, “What is the most difficult part of a vision?” For most, we would assume that the most difficult aspect of a vision is its execution – seeing it come to fruition. I believe differently. When a church and a people have heard from the Lord, God is in charge of the outcome…

The most difficult aspect of a vision is acceptance, followed by receipt, and execution comes in last. The reason it is hard to accept a vision is that we must recognize our frailty and dependence, while at the same time assuming our responsibility. We must acknowledge our dependence upon God for His provision, accepting the fact that we are not in control. We must also commit ourselves to the work.

Last night, as a church, we accepted the challenge! We did this because of our confidence in the receipt of the vision. In simple terms, through prayer, fasting, meditation, and study; we believe that we have heard God’s voice and direction for our future. Not only do we believe this on a corporate level, but we each accepted personal vision and goals in our own lives, as we seek to use the gifts that God has given to us.

In this quick communication, I want to lay out the framework for the vision and ask you to join us in this vision. I recognize that not everyone was able to attend Sunday evening worship, so this is a way of connecting everyone to what’s been going on and asking you to commit to the vision with us!

Let’s start with the framework of the corporate vision. This vision has been broken down into three parts – Missional Challenge, Ministry Challenge, and Structural Challenge. Each part has its own unique goals, leading us to 20 tangible goals we seek to accomplish for the glory of God in Christ Jesus. While some of these things can be accomplished quickly, we would like to see the fulfillment of this vision in three years.

Missional Challenge:

  1. Evangelism and Outreach emphasis in the Sedalia community.
  2. Building 2 churches in India – $43,000 in giving.
  3. 25 people on mission in India – December 2018.
  4. Sponsoring 50 children to be educated at First Baptist Chandigarh School.
  5. Investing more resources in Recovery Ministries – $5,000 to RPM and $5,000 to Sing for the King.
  6. Partnering to plant a church – southern New Jersey, 2019.

Ministry Challenge:

  1. Emphasis on Christian education through small groups and Bible studies – 15 new leaders.
  2. 20% growth in Student ministry participation.
  3. 20% growth in Children Ministry Participation.
  4. Worship and Arts changes.
  5. Prayer emphasis.
  6. Spiritual formation and revival focus – 2 dedicated seasons annually.
  7. 4-5 major fellowship opportunities annually.
  8. Dedicated mental health professionals and care provided.

Structural Challenge:

  1. Finishing the Church – Decoration, Parking Lots, and Rooms.
  2. Personnel Restructuring – 2 Executive Pastors, Youth Associate, and Worship Leader.
  3. Debt Retirement
  4. Technology Changes – Upgrades to podcasts and video and better communication through social media and church app.
  5. Addition of 2-3 Deacons
  6. Addition of 2 Lay Elders

So there it is…20 specific objectives to accomplish in the coming days, months, and years. We then identified the three obstacles to overcome – (1) greater volunteer participation, (2) greater skilled labor participation, and (3) a needed increase in giving by 25%.

While these are lofty goals and difficult obstacles, remember – the results are left in God’s care. We can do none of this without His providential love, grace, and care.

What am I asking of you? The same three questions I asked the church – simply ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Am I willing to dedicate my time, energy, and talents to fulfill the mission?
  2. Am I willing to dedicate my giving to fulfill the challenge?
  3. Where is my place in the mission?

Once you have asked these three questions, prayerfully seek the Lord’s face. Pray for His provision and direction. Pray for His strength and guidance. Jump into the action!!!!

James 4:2 says, “You have not because you ask not.” Over the next two weeks, I am asking the Lord specifically for these 20 things. Will you join me in that prayer?

I’m excited about what God is doing at Cornerstone Baptist Church! I’m excited about what He is going to do in 2018!

Come with us in the journey!!!!
